Hostile GPs could pose challenge for ISTCs
GP consortia will be responsible for renegotiating ISTC contracts once they take over PCT budgets under the coalition government’s planned commissioning reforms, with some in the independent sector fearing the cold shoulder.
Chris Glasper, director of Equity Research at Brewin Dolphin, told HMN that historic GP antipathy towards ISTCs generally, and the private sector particularly, may mean they are less inclined to renew contracts and that old habits may well die hard. ‘There are so many vested interests out there that antipathy towards the private sector will be an issue that won’t go away. There will be legal safeguards to prevent anti-competitive behaviour, but there are certain predispositions that affect behaviour and these won’t go away overnight. With patient choice we will see patients gravitate towards the best services, so it’s up to operators to be the best,’ he said.
